How to edit this wiki

Table of contents

The openECGproject is powered by TikiWiki CMS/Groupware (external link), originally and more commonly known as Tiki Wiki. The content management system at the heart of Tiki Wiki powers our wiki, forum and blog. While this system might be complex on the back end, it is quite easy for end users to start using it.

TikiWiki syntax

To format and style the text in a wiki page, you will use wiki syntax. This syntax is similar to HTML or other markup languages. It uses common characters in uncommon ways (or character combinations that are not normally used together) and provides them with a special meaning. Sure you can just paste text without any formatting and save it as a Wiki page, but that page would look really ugly. It would not have things like headings, lists, text decoration etc. However, don't panic because you don't have to learn this syntax by heart or enter it manually. When you start editing a page, a toolbar will appear on the top which functions similar to those in commonly used computer word processors like Microsoft Word. You just click on quicktags and easily apply formatting to the text. To make the experience of editing our wiki even more enjoyable, we included a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get editor) editor which functions just as your word processor.

Here is screenshot of the list of Quicktags and Wiki Syntax.

Now that we covered some basics, you should go and play in the sandbox. The sandbox is a special wiki page that can be used by visitors to practice their wiki skill and learn the wiki syntax. It looks exactly the same as when editing a real Wiki pages, but doesn't save anything, so you can practice all you want without messing things up.

Edit and create Wiki pages

Once logged in, you will see a menu at the bottom of every Wiki page with several options. One of them will be edit. When you click edit you are able to edit the page that you are watching. Use the preview feature as many times as you need it before clicking save.

There are two different ways you can create a new Wiki page. Let's say you are editing a page and insert a new link to a non existent Wiki page. Once you click save you will see that Tiki Wiki added a question mark right after the link you entered. When you click on it Tiki Wiki automatically creates this new page for you, gives it a title and allows you to edit it. This is a very good way to create a new page since Wiki is all about links. You would not want to create a page without any links to already existing pages, because that would make it what is called an orphan page. The second way to create a new page is to use the Quick Edit a Wiki page module which is located inside the left column of your user interface. Just input the name of your new page and click on the button.
