PC Hardware

This page is dedicated to the considerations in selecting the minimum target PC hardware:

There are always compromises to be made when designing a system. One of the main considerations with this project would be some analysis of what computer equipment is available in the target regions. I am not privy to any such research as of this writing however. So the other angle to take is to work backwards from the current assumptions.

The current plan is to use Java. That has the advantage of being very operating system independent. It is also able to run on some very low end hardware, such as a 33mhz 32meg ram laptop processing a stereo 8 bit 44.1 kHz signal.

There are no current ram/cpu requirements for java 6.0 specified, only about 150 meg of hard disk space. From experience I would suggest the following as a starting point for doing a dedicated but reasonably featured and networked java program:

CPU: 450MHZ
RAM: 256MB
Hard Disk: 200MB free
1024x768 Color display
Operating System: Any java enablable OS.
TCP IP connection (wired or wireless) for network functionality.
